Writing Beneath Beauford Grove

I’ve never been more excited for a book release. Beneath Beauford Grove became something deeply personal during the writing process—a story that allowed me to weave together the shadows of Southern Gothic horror with the golden threads of my own Alabama childhood.

While this is absolutely a work of fiction, I found myself drawing on sense memories that I hadn’t touched in years. The pastures where Evangeline remembers playing as a child? Those came from my own afternoons in Alabama fields, building makeshift playhouses with neighboring kids using old tin slabs from the barn. I can still feel the rough bark of those towering pecan trees under my fingertips and smell that particular sweetness of summer grass.

Even some of the book’s most intense moments grew from real emotional landscapes—like the birthing scene, which I transformed and amplified into something much darker for the story, but which began with authentic feelings about life and creation.

Writing this book meant walking through the South again, but this time in Dr. Evangeline Beauford’s shoes, seeing familiar landscapes through the lens of supernatural dread. It’s amazing how childhood memories can become the foundation for the most haunting fiction.
