I long to escape local scenery
Mountainous high-rises, condo beehives
Cringe-worthy lives squarely compartmentalized
Glassy illusions of life
I long for nature’s bucolic beauty
rolling hills, sky-high trees, misty breezes
along sunny speckled creeks
I long to escape behind the wheel
and watch nature rush past in verdant rows
I close my eyes escaping towering high-rises
the wheel vibrating beneath my palm
the wind tickling my ear and brushing my face
as nature swims toward a cerebral destination
arriving at a greener hallucination

I really enjoyed this, Denise. Reminds me to be thankful for where I live in the Upstate region of South Carolina. In thirty minutes I can be in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, numerous cascading waterfalls, pristine rivers (the Chattooga of “Deliverance” fame; the Chauga, plus many lesser mountainous creeks which feed them. Add in hundreds of miles of hiking trails all within an hour’s drive and you have a natural paradise. Thanks for the reminder not to take such wonders for granted. 🙂

Michael, I’m jealous! South Carolina sounds wonderful. Lately, I’ve contemplated leaving the city for a less stressful environment. My family is from the south, residing in Pensacola, Florida. I’ve been in New York since I was a child and don’t know If I can give up city conveniences. But nature has been calling for a while. One day, I might pack up, jump into the car, and follow the road to a more bucolic surroundings. 🙂 Thank you for the response, Michael!
